Would I walk into a well-known coffee shop chain on the high street and when asked what I would like to drink, answer with a one word response: "coffee"? The European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is expected to come into force in 2018, provides for fines of up to 4% of annual global revenue or 20m, whichever is greater, for failure to safeguard data of EU citizens and residents.
