Clients are shaping the management consulting industry and they don't know it
Our management consultancy columnist, Mick James, this week tries not to make predictions about the nature of the industry in 2012.
Recent readers of this column will know that for predictions and prognostications for the coming year they're probably better off with the horoscope section of The Daily Mail. I'm in a state of perpetual confusion about the economy, although I have to say that the fact that Gordon Brown is beginning to sound like Jim Callaghan in his "Moses" period has begun to edge me towards the camp of the doom mongers. Could 2008 be the year of the "perfect storm" in which we are treated to a replay of all the best bits of the oil crisis of 1971, the Winter of Discontent of 1978, the 1982 recession and the 1990s housing slump?

Employers contemplate social networking, focus on improving technology in 2008
Companies will focus on upgrading and integrating their human resources technology in 2008 in an effort to improve administration and better engage employees, according to experts at Watson Wyatt Worldwide, a leading global consulting firm. Among likely trends are the increased adoption of advanced Web solutions, such as wikis, blogs and social networking, and a focus on making HR technology easier for employees to use.

Investment in training and development set to grow in 2008
Investment in training and career development is set to grow in 2008 as companies devote more resources to non-pay related strategies to keep their staff motivated and engaged, according to findings from Mercer's 2007 European Total Rewards Survey. Sixty three percent of respondents intend to keep investment in base salary steady, while 8 percent would actually reduce it. Respondents also noted that attracting and retaining employees will remain the most significant rewards challenge facing businesses.
