KPMG is back in the game
Our management consultancy columnist, Mick James, this week talks to Alan Downey, chief operating officer for KPMG Risk Advisory Services, about the firm's return to consultancy.

The return of the Big Four consultancy firms has opened up a new fault line in the market pace with the notion of the "client side advisory" firm, as distinct from the end-to-end supplier with fingers in the pies of outsourcing and systems integration. It's a branding scuffle that often threatens to become bitter: Are the big consultancies just sales engines for outsourcing and integration, or do the accountants lack the resources to follow through on their advice?

Consultants driving change in the public sector
Implementing the government's change agenda has created enormous amounts of work for the consultancy industry, which has been called upon to implement change projects on an unprecedented scale. With so many projects underway, it's inevitable that some will run into trouble. Unfortunately press coverage has tended to focus on high profile failures, without any counter balancing reports of success. Worse, politicians and the media have tended to focus on totting up every penny spent on consultants without considering either the sheer variety of projects or the benefits achieved. Axon reports strong full-year results
The company enters 2007 with a strong balance sheet and both the largest order book and sales pipeline in its history.

Mark Hunter, Executive Chairman , said: "Whilst we have just had a great year, we still only have a 1% share of the global SAP Services market and we therefore have many opportunities for further expansion. We also have a strong order book, a good pipeline and excellent operational controls and I look forward to reporting continued progress during the course of 2007."

What can consulting firms do to make consultants stay?
Consulting firms today face quite a dilemma. Put simply, the demand for their services is growing far faster than they are able to grow their headcount. Partly this reflects the fact that firms can't recruit suitable staff quickly enough. But equally it's a reflection of the fact that consultancies are also having to replace a significant number of staff who choose to move on.

That's where you come in.

Retention of existing staff has become a critical issue for the industry. Losing experienced consultants is literally costing the industry millions in lost fees and billable time being devoted to interviewing rather than client delivery.

13 simple steps towards hiring a consultant
Hiring a consultancy firm can be a treacherous path with many traps and pitfalls along the way – one wrong decision can have far reaching consequences. A gala tribute to global copycats
Over the decade, the art of copying and stealing other people's content and ideas has settled comfortably in the mainstream across the globe. What formerly would constitute an act of piracy is now a commonplace, everyday occurrence. Isn't it time to give these 'borrowers' a tribute, host a gala dinner and hand out awards?
